HARVEST MOON 🌕

luisa zambrotta's avatarwords and music and stories

This night’s full moon, the closest to the September equinox, is the Harvest Moon. Our friend Pat (e-Quips) published a lovely poem about it: you can read it here

In the Northern Hemisphere the Harvest Moon is astronomically significant because even though the time between one moonrise and the next becomes shorter (typically, the Moon rises on average 50 minutes later each day), the satellite tends to rise at about the same time for the few nights that proceed and follow the equinox.
In the past, the light of the full moon meant that farmers could work and harvest their crops until late at night.

Neil Young wrote the song the Harvest Moon, the title track from the album released in 1992.

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin’
We could dream this night away.

But there’s a full…

DAY FOR THE RHINOS

Theme: This year the theme for Rhino day is “Five Rhino Species Forever“.

This theme highlights the importance of the five rhino species which are left in our world today. The theme was thoughtfully decided to draw attention to the protection of these five rhinos.

Every year World Rhino Day is observed on September 22, 2022. The day plays an important role in raising awareness to save the rhino species. The horns of rhinos are being hunted for various medicinal purposes. This is one of the reasons for the slow extinction of this species.

World Rhino Day was first observed in 2011, and every year since then, it has been observed worldwide. By 1970, rhino numbers dropped to 70,000 and today around 27,000 rhinos remain in the wild. Very few rhinos survive outside national parks and reserves due to persistent poaching and habitat loss over many decades.

Rhino poaching has risen to levels not seen in almost two decades. Although there is no scientific proof of its medical value, rhino horn remains highly prized in traditional Asian medicine, where it is ground into a fine powder as treatment for a variety of illnesses such as nosebleeds and fevers.

Rhino poaching is being driven by the demand for rhino horn in Asian countries, particularly China and Viet Nam. Rhino horn is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but increasingly common is its use as a status symbol to display success and wealth.

Over the centuries, rhino horns have been carved into ceremonial cups, as well as buttons, belt buckles, hair pins, and paperweights. Far more pervasive, however, is their use in the traditional medicine systems of many Asian countries, from Malaysia and South Korea to India and China, to cure a variety of ailments.

Rhino horn is made from keratin—a protein found in fingernails and hair. The product is falsely said to help treat everything from cancer to gout when consumed in its powder form. There are no proven medicinal benefits in humans from either product.

There are only two northern white rhinos left in the world today (2022) and they are both females. The last remaining male passed away in 2018 leaving the two females to be cared for at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

World Rhino Day on Wednesday, September 22, is being marked in Assam with a special ceremony by burning nearly 2,500 one-horned rhinoceros horns. The Assam Cabinet announced the decision last week after the forest department’s ‘rhino horn re-verification’ exercises lasting weeks.

The purpose of burning rhino horns is to give poachers a clear message and smugglers that these items had no value. It was  for their conservation and aimed at busting myths regarding their horns.

🎗️WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY🎗️

Theme: The theme for World Alzheimer’s Month in September 2022 is “Know dementia, know Alzheimer’s”.

Debasis Nayak's avatarB +Ve!!

Theme for 2021: “Know dementia, know Alzheimer’s”.

The day is commemorated annually on September 21 to spread awareness and educate people about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In some countries, it is observed the whole month. Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. He had noticed some changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. It also occurs with other diseases.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and progressively worsens. It is the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia.

The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events. As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, self-neglect, and behavioural issues.

As a person’s condition declines, they often withdraw from family and society. Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Although…

SOULS IN STARS

Hellions' BookNook's avatarHellions' BookNook

I reach out

To the soul that I miss,

The friend I know

breathes to exist.

The searching soul,

That holds beauty in hand,

That loves the stars

and worships the sand.

We run in the clouds,

Drink the rain,

Idolize the Moon,

Sleep between grain.

Wake up to the morning,

With foggy eyes,

Seeking adventures,

like fire flies.

“And let that be a lesson to you all. Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row.”

That was what the tennis player said after breaking his 16-time losing streak.

Sometimes, it almost seems like the best way to get through life is to lie to ourselves. But then again, it’s not lying if it’s true, right? We’re just choosing to reframe what’s good and bad. Seeing the silver lining, if you will.

So join me as we take a look at how we can better lie to ourselves, and turn our negatives into positives.

Ozone – The Roof of Life

https://www.un.org/en/observances/ozone-day

September 16 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. This designation had been made on December 19, 2000, in commemoration of the date, in 1987, on which nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The closure of the hole in the ozone layer was observed 30 years after the protocol was signed. Due to the nature of the gases responsible for ozone depletion their chemical effects are expected to continue for between 50 and 100 years.

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY

Grandparents Day is an official national holiday, signed by President Carter in 1978 and celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. In 1970, Marian McQuade began a campaign to establish a special day of recognition for grandparents. Through her efforts, she reached out to the civic, business, faith, and political leaders and began a statewide campaign for Grandparents Day.

Grandparents’ Day or National Grandparents’ Day is a secular holiday celebrated in various countries; it is celebrated to show the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. It occurs on various days of the year, either as one holiday or sometimes as a separate Grandmothers’ Day and Grandfather’s Day.

The proclamation, establishing National Grandparents Day stated three distinct purposes: To honor grandparents; To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children; To help children become aware of strength, information and guidance older people can offer.

Grandparents Day is a day for celebrating the connections between the generations, and its origin was decidedly noncommercial. The holiday has remained fairly true to its roots. A few ways to celebrate include meals or shared activities like playing cards, going for a walk, or just visiting over a cup of tea.
