THE WORLD OF VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality (VR) is something that can take you beyond your imagination. Thanks to technology. Today, for the first time i enjoyed something very special. I have enjoyed the roller-coaster ride and scary house. It’s real fun when you visualize things happening around you in a 3D environment. How do you feel when you find a dinosaur approaching you inside your home? It can give a real feeling if you have never witnessed that before.

Both children and adults can enjoy it equally. I’d say adults should visit a center nearby who find it difficult to go to an amusement park like wonderla. There are many restrictions for them because of age and health related issues. But here, they can enjoy the show at their desk.

I got very good information there. For technology enthusiasts who want to create such an environment at home there is good news. It will cost you about 1.5-2 lakh rupees for both the software and hardware. It needs a machine with very high quality processor, a video graphics card of about 8 GM RAM and many more things that we can easily find out with some basic web search.

Have you ever experienced VR or something similar to this? Please share your experience. I’d love to read your comments here. I will be happy to read your emails too. I frequently access my email – n.debasis@gmail.com. I am present in social media too and can be reached there.

INDEPENDENCE DAY SPEECH

I found this year’s Independence Day speech by our honorable Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi quite different to speeches made earlier. It has a lot of vision to build a better nation. Following is the English rendering of the speech delivered by him in Hindi on our 68th Independence Day from Red Fort.

My Dear Countrymen,

Today, all Indians in the country and also abroad are celebrating the festival of independence. On this day of sacred festival of independence, the prime servant of India extends greetings to all dear countrymen.

I am present amidst you not as the Prime Minister, but as the Prime Servant. The freedom struggle was fought for so many years, so many generations laid down their lives, innumerable people sacrificed their lives and youth, spent their entire lives behind bars. Today, I pay my respect, greetings and homage to all those who laid their lives for the country`s independence.

I also pay my respects to our crores of citizens of this country on the pious occasion of India’s independence, and recall all those martyrs who had laid down their lives in India’s struggle for freedom. The day of Independence is a festival when we take a solemn pledge of working for the welfare of mother India, and also for the welfare of the poor, oppressed, Dalit, the exploited & the backward people of our country.

My dear countrymen, national festivals are occasion to refine and rebuild the national character. This National festival inspires us to resolve ourselves to lead a life where our character gets refined further, to dedicate ourselves to the nation and our every activity is linked to the interest of the nation and only then this festival of freedom can be a festival of inspiration to take India to newer heights.

My dear countrymen, this nation has neither been built by political leaders nor by rulers nor by governments.

This nation has been built by our farmers, our workers, our mothers and sisters, our youth. The country has reached here today because of generation to generation rigours undertaken by our sages, our saints, our maestros, our teachers, our scientists and social workers. These great people and these great generations, who had worked for the country throughout their lives, deserve our deepest respect.

This is the beauty of India’s Constitution, this is its capability which has made it possible that today a boy from small town, a poor family has got the opportunity to pay homage to the Tricolour of India at the ramparts of Lal Quila (Red Fort). This is the strength of India’s democracy. This is an invaluable legacy which we have inherited from our architects of the Constitution. I pay my respects to those architects of the constitution of India today.

Brothers and sisters, today if we have reached here after independence, it is because of the contribution of all the Prime Ministers, all the governments and even the governments of all the States. I want to express my feelings of respect and gratitude to all those previous governments and ex-Prime Ministers who have endeavoured to take our present day India to such heights and who have added to the country’s glory.

This country has been built on such foundation of ancient cultural heritage, where we were told of only one mantra during Vedic period, which is indicative of our work culture, which we have learnt, we have memorized – “Sangachchhdhvam Samvadadhvam sam wo manansi jaanataam.” We walk together, we move together, we think together, we resolve together and together we take this country forward.

Having imbibed this basic mantra, 125 crore countrymen have taken the nation forward. Yesterday only the first Parliamentary Session of the new government had concluded.

Today, I can proudly say that the session of Parliament reflects our thinking and it is a reflection of our intentions. We are not for moving forward on the basis of majority, we are not interested to move forward by virtue of majority. We want to move ahead on the basis of strong consensus. “Sangachhadhwam” and, therefore, the nation has witnessed the entire session of Parliament.

Having taken all the Parties and Opposition along while working shoulder to shoulder, we achieved an unprecedented success and the credit for this does not go to the Prime Minister alone, the credit does not go to the people sitting in the government, the credit for this goes to the Opposition also, the credit goes to all the leaders of Opposition too and also all the Members from Opposition.

From the ramparts of Red Fort, quite proudly I salute all the Members of Parliament, I also salute all the political parties and by virtue of their strong support, we could take some important decisions intended to take the nation forward and yesterday the Session of Parliament had concluded.

Brothers and sisters, I am an outsider for Delhi; I am not a native of Delhi. I have no idea about the administration and working of this place. I have been quite isolated from the elite class of this place but during the last two months while being an outsider, I had an insider view and I was astonished. It is not a political platform, rather it is a platform of a national policy and, therefore, my views should not be evaluated from a political perspective.

I have already said, I salute all the ex-Prime Ministers and earlier governments who have brought the country thus far. But I am going to say something else and it may not be seen from political point of view. When I came to Delhi and noticed an insider view, I felt what it was and I was surprised to see it. It seemed as if dozens of separate governments are running at the same time in one main government. It appeared that everyone has its own fiefdom. I could observe disunity and conflict among them. One department is taking on the other department and taking on to the extent that two departments of the same government are fighting against each other by approaching Supreme Court. This disunity, this conflict among people of the same country! How come we can take the country forward? And that is why I have started making efforts for razing those walls; I have started making efforts at making the government, not an assembled entity, but an organic unity, an organic entity, a harmonious whole- with one aim, one mind, one direction, one energy.

Let’s resolve to steer the country to one destination. We have it in us to move in that direction. A few days back…Nowadays newspapers are full of news that Modi-ji’s government has come, officers are reaching office on time, offices open in time, and people get there in time. I observed that India’s national newspapers, TV media were carrying these news items prominently.

As the head of the government I could have derived pleasure in the fact that everything started going on time, cleanliness got the attention, but I was not taking pleasure, I was feeling pained. That thing, I want to tell today in public. And why, because if government officers arrive office in time, does that make a news? And if that makes news, it shows how low we have fallen. It becomes a proof of that, and that’s how, brothers and sisters, the governments have run? Today in the face of global competition, when we have to realise the dreams of millions of Indians, the country cannot run on the lines of “it happens”, “it goes”.

In order to fulfil the aspirations of masses, we have to sharpen the tool called the government machinery, we have to make it keen, more dynamic, and it is in this direction that we are working.

My countrymen, it’s not long since I have come from outside Delhi, but I give you an assurance that the people in the government are very capable – from the peon to the Cabinet Secretary, everybody is capable, everybody has a power, they have experience. I want to awaken that power, I want to unite that power and want to accelerate the pace of the welfare of nation through that power and I shall definitely do it. I want to assure the countrymen that we will achieve that, we will definitely do that. I could not say this on 16th May, but today after my experience of two-two and half months, keeping the Tricolour as witness, I am saying on 15th of August that it is possible, it will be achieved.

Brothers and sisters, time has come to give a serious thought to the fact that whether we have a duty to create India of the dreams of those great people who gave us freedom, whether we have a national character?

Brothers and sisters, can someone please tell me as to whether he or she has ever introspected in the evening after a full day’s work as to whether his or her acts have helped the poor of the country or not, whether his or her actions have resulted in safeguarding the interest of the country or not, whether the actions have been directed in country’s welfare or not? Whether it should not be the motto of one and a quarter billion countrymen that every step in life should be in the country’s interests?

Unfortunately, we have an environment today wherein if you approach anyone with some work, he begins by saying “what does it mean for me?” He begins by saying “what does it involve for me?” and when he come to know that it does not entail any benefit for him, immediately he says “why should I bother?” We have to rise above the feelings of “what does it mean for me?” and “why should I bother?”

Everything is not for self-interest only. There are certain things which are meant for the country and we have to refine this national character. We have to rise above the feelings of “why should I bother?” and “what does it mean for me?” and instead we have to think that “I am for nation’s interest and in this field, I am going to lead”. We have to inculcate this sentiment.

Brothers and sisters, when we hear about the incidents of rape, we hang our heads in shame. People come out with different arguments, someone indulges in psycho analysis, but brothers and sisters, today from this platform, I want to ask those parents, I want to ask every parent that you have a daughter of 10 or 12 years age, you are always on the alert, every now and then you keep on asking where are you going, when would you come back, inform immediately after you reach. Parents ask their daughters hundreds of questions, but have any parents ever dared to ask their son as to where he is going, why he is going out, who his friends are. After all, a rapist is also somebody’s son. He also has parents. As parents, have we ever asked our son as to what he is doing and where he is going? If every parent decides to impose as many restrictions on the sons as have been imposed on our daughters, try to do this with your sons, try to ask such questions of them.

My dear brothers and sisters, the law will take its own course, strict action will be taken, but as a member of the society, as parents, we also have some responsibilities.

If somebody tells me those who have taken guns on their shoulders and kill innocent people are Maoists or terrorists, they should not forget those people are also somebody’s children. I would like to ask of such parents if they had ever asked their children as to why they were taking a wrong path. Every parent must take this responsibility; he must know that his misguided son is bent on killing innocent people. He is not able to serve himself nor his family nor the country. I want to say to those youngsters who have chosen the path of violence that whatever they are and wherever they are, it is all because of mother India only that they have got it.

Whoever you are it is all because of your parents. I want to ask you to think how green, how beautiful and how beneficial this earth can become if you shoulder the plough instead of the gun which spills blood on this land. How long shall we have bloodshed on this land, how long shall we take the lives of the innocent people and what have we got after all this? The path of violence has not yielded anything to us.

Brothers and sisters, I had gone to Nepal recently. There I said something publicly to draw the attention of the whole world. There was a time when the Emperor Ashoka who had chosen the path of wars, got converted to the path of Buddha at the sight of violence.

There was a time in Nepal when their youngsters had opted for the path of violence but today I witness that the same youngsters are waiting for their constitution. The same people associated with them are framing the constitution. And I further said that if Nepal could present the best example of moving from the weapons to the books then it could provide inspiration to the youngsters in the world to abandon the path of violence.

Brothers and sisters, if Nepal, the land of Buddha, can give message to the world then why can’t India do the same too? So it’s the call of the hour that we renounce the path of violence and take the path of brotherhood.

Brothers and sisters, for one reason or the other, we have had communal tensions for ages. This led to the division of the country. Even after Independence, we have had to face the poison of casteism and communalism. How long these evils will continue? Whom does it benefit? We have had enough of fights, many have been killed. Friends, look behind and you will find that nobody has benefited from it. Except casting a slur on Mother India, we have done nothing. Therefore, I appeal to all those people that whether it is the poison of casteism, communalism, regionalism, discrimination on social and economic basis, all these are obstacles in our way forward. Let’s resolve for once in our hearts; let’s put a moratorium on all such activities for 10 years, we shall march ahead to a society which will be free from all such tensions. And you will see that how much strength we get from peace, unity, goodwill and brotherhood. Let`s experiment it for once.

My dear countrymen; believe in my words, I do assure you. Shun all the sins committed so far, give up that way, follow the way of goodwill and brotherhood, and let’s resolve to take the country forward. I believe we can do that.

With advancement of science, brothers and sisters, we have a rising feeling of modernity in our mind, but what do we do? Have we ever thought what the sex ratio in the country is like? 940 girls are born against per 1,000 boys. Who is causing this imbalance in the society? It’s certainly not by God. I request the doctors not to kill the girl growing in the womb of a mother just to line their own pockets. I advise mothers and sisters not to sacrifice daughters in the hope of son. Sometimes mother-father feel tempted to have son in the hope of supporting them in old age. I am a person who has worked in public life. I have come across families with five sons, each having bungalows, access to fleet of cars, but parents are forced to live in old-age homes (“Vriddhashrams-in Hindi”). I have seen such families. I have also seen families with only daughter as progeny, that daughter sacrifices her dreams, doesn’t get married, and spends entire life in taking care of old parents.

This disparity points to female foeticide and the polluted and tainted mind the 21st century has. We will have to liberate from it, and that is message to us of this freedom festival.

Recently Commonwealth Games were organised. Indian sportspersons brought glory to the country. Nearly 64 of our sportspersons won. Our sportspersons brought 64 medals. But of them 29 are girls. Let’s feel proud and clap for them. Girls also contribute to India’s fame and glory. Let’s recognise it. Let’s take them along, shoulder to shoulder. This way we can get over the evils that have crept in social life. Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have to proceed in that direction as a social and national character.

Brothers and Sisters, development is the only way forward for the country. Good governance is the only way. There are only these two tracks to take the country forward – good governance and development, we can move forward only by taking them with us. We wish to move forward with the intent of taking them with us. When I talk of good governance, you tell me, when I ask a person in private job, he tells that he does the job; when you ask the same from a person in government job, he says that I do the service. Both earn, but for one it is job while for the other it is service. I ask a question from all brothers and sisters in government service, whether the word “service” has not lost its strength, its identity? Persons in government service are not doing “job”, they are doing “service”. We have to revive this feeling, we have to take this feeling forward as a national character; we have to move forward in this direction.

Brothers and Sisters, whether the citizens of the country should take steps for the welfare of the nation or not? You imagine, if these 125 crore countrymen move one step forward, then the country moves 125 crore steps forward. The meaning of democracy is not just limited to electing a government, but its meaning is that 125 crore of citizens work together joining shoulder with the government to fulfil hopes and aspirations of the country, this is the meaning of democracy.

We have to create partnership with the people. We have to proceed under Public-Private Partnership. We have to proceed along with the participation of the people. But, please tell me why our farmers commit suicide? A farmer takes loan from the moneylender, but fails to repay his loans. He takes loan for the wedding of his daughter, but fails to repay. He will have to suffer hardships during his whole life. He chooses to commit suicide. Who will save the poor families of such farmers?

Brothers and sisters, I have come here with a pledge to launch a scheme on this festival of Freedom. It will be called ‘Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana’. I wish to connect the poorest citizens of the country with the facility of bank accounts through this plan (Yojana). There are millions of families who have mobile phones but no bank accounts. We have to change this scenario. Economic resources of the country should be utilized for the well-being of the poor. The change will commence from this point. This yojana will open the window. Therefore, an account holder under ‘Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana’ will be given a debit card. An insurance of rupees 1 lakh will be guaranteed with that debit card for each poor family, so that such families are covered with the insurance of rupees 1 lakh in case of any crisis in their lives.

My brothers and sisters, it is a country of young people. The 65 percent population of the country happens to be under the age of 35 years. Our country has the largest number of youths in the world. Have we ever thought of deriving an advantage out of it? Today, the world needs a skilled workforce. Today, India also needs a skilled workforce. At times, we look for a good driver but he is not available, we look for a plumber, but he is not available. If we need a good cook, he is not available. We have young people, they are unemployed but the kind of young people we seek for are not available. If we have to promote the development of our country then our mission has to be “skill development” and “skilled India”.

Millions and Millions of Indian youth should go for acquisition of skills and there should be a network across the country for this and not the archaic systems. They should acquire the skills which could contribute towards making India a modern country. Whenever they go to any country in the world, their skills must be appreciated and we want to go for a two pronged development.

I also want to create a pool of young people who are able to create jobs and the ones who are not capable of creating jobs and do not have the opportunities, they must be in a position to face their counterparts in any corner of the world while keeping their heads high by virtue of their hard work and their dexterity of hands and win the hearts of people around the world through their skills. We want to go for the capacity building of such young people. My brothers and sisters, having taken a resolve to enhance the skill development at a highly rapid pace, I want to accomplish this.

Brothers and sisters, the world has undergone a change. My dear countrymen, the world has changed. Now India cannot decide its future by remaining isolated and sitting alone in a corner. The economics of the world have changed and, therefore, we will have to act accordingly. Government have taken many decisions recently, made some announcements in the budget and I call upon the world and call upon the Indians spread world over that if we have to provide more and more employment to the youth, we will have to promote manufacturing sector. If we have to develop a balance between imports and exports, we will have to strengthen manufacturing sector. If we have to put in use the education, the capability of the youth, we will have to go for manufacturing sector and for this Hindustan also will have to lend its full strength, but we also invite world powers.

Therefore I want to appeal all the people world over, from the ramparts of Red Fort, “Come, make in India”, “Come, manufacture in India”. Sell in any country of the world but manufacture here. We have got skill, talent, discipline, and determination to do something. We want to give the world an favourable opportunity that come here, “Come, Make in India” and we will say to the world, from electrical to electronics, “Come, Make in India”, from automobiles to agro value addition “Come, Make in India”, paper or plastic, “Come, Make in India”, satellite or submarine “Come, Make in India”. Our country is powerful. Come, I am giving you an invitation.

Brothers and sisters, I want to call upon the youth of the country, particularly the small people engaged in the industrial sector. I want to call upon the youth working in the field of technical education in the country. As I say to the world “Come, Make in India”, I say to the youth of the country – it should be our dream that this message reaches every corner of the world, “Made in India”. This should be our dream. Whether, to serve the country, is it necessary for the youth of the country to be hanged like Bhagat Singh? Brothers and sisters, Lal Bahadur Shastri had given the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”. A soldier sacrifices himself at the border and protects Mother India. Similarly, a farmer serves Mother India by filling the go-downs with grains. This is also nation’s service. Filling the granary is the biggest nation`s service that a farmer provides. That is why Lal Bahadur Shashtri had given the slogan of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”.

Brothers and Sisters, I would like to pose a question to my youngsters as to why despite them, we are forced to import even the smallest of things? My country’s youth can resolve it, they should conduct research, try to find out as to what type of items are imported by India and then each one should resolve that, through may be micro or small industries only, he would manufacture atleast one such item so that we need not import the same in future. We should even advance to a situation wherein we are able to export such items. If each one of our millions of youngsters resolves to manufacture at least one such item, India can become a net exporter of goods. I, therefore, urge upon the youth, in particular our small entrepreneurs that they would never compromise, at least on two counts. First, zero defect and, second again zero effect. We should manufacture goods in such a way that they carry zero defect, that our exported goods are never returned to us. We should manufacture goods with zero effect that they should not have a negative impact on the environment. If we march ahead with the dream of zero defect in the manufacturing sector then, my brothers and sisters, I am confident that we would be able to achieve our goals.

Brothers and sisters, the youth of India has completely transformed the identity of India in the world. Earlier, in what manner did the world know our country? Till only 25-30 years back, if not more, there were many people in the world who thought that India was a country of snake charmers, it was a country which practiced in black magic.

The real identity of India had not reached the world, but my dear brothers and sisters, our youngsters, 20-22-23 years old youngsters have mesmerized the whole world with their skills in computers. Our young IT professionals have given a new path of making a new identity of India. If our country has this strength, can we think something about the country? Our dream is, therefore, of “Digital India”. When I talk of “Digital India”, I don’t speak of the elite, it is for the poor people.

You can imagine what a quality education the children in villages will get, if all the villages of India are connected with broadband connectivity and if we are able to give long distance education to the schools in every remote corner of the villages. If we create a network of telemedicine in the places where there is a shortage of doctors, we can have a clear guideline of the way in which health facilities have to be provided to the poor people living in those areas.

The citizens of India have mobile phones in their hands, they have mobile connectivity, but can we walk in the direction of mobile governance? We have to move in a direction where every poor person is able to operate his bank account from his mobile, is able to demand various things from the government, can submit applications, can conduct all his business, while on the move, through mobile governance and if this has to be done, we have to move towards `digital India` and if we have to move towards `digital India` then we have a dream.

Today we are importing electronic goods on a large scale. Friends, you will be surprised that we are bringing in these televisions, mobile phones, iPads and all these electronic goods. It is a necessity to import petroleum products, oil, diesel and petrol. Second to this is the import of our electronic goods. If we move ahead with the dream of `digital India` to manufacture electronic goods and become self-reliant at least there, let’s think how big can it be for the benefit of our treasury! Therefore, e-governance is what we need to take this idea of ‘digital India’ forward.

E-governance is easy governance, effective governance and also economic governance. E-governance paves the way for good governance. There was a time when we used to say that the railways provided connectivity to the country. That was it. I say that today it is IT that has the potential to connect each and every citizen of the country and that is why we want to realise the mantra of unity with the help of “digital India”.

Brothers and sisters, if we move ahead with all this then I believe that a `digital India` will have the potential to stand with the world on equal footing. Our youth have that capability; it is an opportunity for them.

Brothers and sisters, we want to promote tourism. Tourism provides employment to the poorest of the poor. Gram seller earns something, auto-rickshaw driver earns something, fast-food pakoda seller earns something and tea seller also earns something. When there is talk of tea seller, I feel a sense of belongingness. Tourism provides employment to the poorest of the poor. But there is a big obstacle in promoting tourism and in our national character and that is – the filthiness all around us. Whether after independence, after so many years of independence, when we stand at the threshold of one and half decade of 21st century, we still want to live in filthiness? The first work I started here after formation of government is of cleanliness. People wondered whether it is a work of a prime minister. People may feel that it is a trivial work for a Prime Minister but for me this is a big work. Cleanliness is very big work. If 125 crore countrymen decide that they will never spread filthiness, which power in the world has ability to spread filthiness in our cities and villages? Can’t we resolve this much?

Brothers and sisters it will be the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019. How do we celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi? Mahatma Gandhi, who gave us freedom, who brought so much honour to such a big country in the world, what do we give to Mahatma Gandhi? Brothers and Sisters, Mahatma Gandhi had cleanliness and sanitation closest to his heart. Whether we resolve not to leave a speck of dirt in our village, city, street, area, school, temple, hospital, and what have you, by 2019 when we celebrate 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi? This happens not just with the Government, but with public participation. That’s why we have to do it together.

Brother and Sisters, we are living in 21st century. Has it ever pained us that our mothers and sisters have to defecate in open? Whether dignity of women is not our collective responsibility? The poor womenfolk of the village wait for the night; until darkness descends, they can`t go out to defecate. What bodily torture they must be feeling, how many diseases that act might engender. Can’t we just make arrangements for toilets for the dignity of our mothers and sisters? Brothers and Sisters, somebody might feel that a big festival like 15th August is an occasion to talk big.

Brothers and Sisters, talking big has its importance, making announcements too has importance, but sometimes announcements raise hopes and when the hopes are not fulfilled, the society sinks into a state of despondency. That’s why are in favour of telling those things, which we can fulfill just within our sight. Brothers and sisters, you must be getting shocked to hear the Prime Minister speaking of cleanliness and the need to build toilets from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

Brothers and sisters, I do not know how my speech is going to be criticised and how will people take it. But this is my heartfelt conviction. I come from a poor family, I have seen poverty. The poor need respect and it begins with cleanliness. I, therefore, have to launch a “Clean India” campaign from 2nd October this year and carry it forward in 4 years. I want to make a beginning today itself and that is – all schools in the country should have toilets with separate toilets for girls. Only then our daughters will not be compelled to leave schools midway. Our parliamentarians utilising MPLAD fund are there. I appeal to them to spend it for constructing toilets in schools for a year. The government should utilise its budget on providing toilets. I call upon the corporate sector also to give priority to the provision of toilets in schools with your expenditure under Corporate Social Responsibility. This target should be finished within one year with the help of state governments and on the next 15th August, we should be in a firm position to announce that there is no school in India without separate toilets for boys and girls.

Brothers and sisters, if we proceed with the dreams, we are in a position to realise them. Today, I wish to tell one more specific thing. It has its own importance to discuss the matters and express the views of nation’s interest. However, our Members of Parliament do not get opportunity though they are willing to do something. They can express themselves, write to the government, agitate, give memoranda. Still they do not get opportunity to do something on their own.

Today I have come to you with a new idea. We are running so many schemes in the name of the Prime Minister in our country; there are numerous schemes in the name of various leaders. However, today I am going to announce a scheme on behalf of the Member of Parliament- Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojana. We shall fix some parameters. I urge upon the Members of Parliament to select any one of the villages having population of three to five thousand in your constituency. The parameters will be according to the time, space and situation of that locality. It will include the conditions of health, cleanliness, atmosphere, greenery, cordiality etc.

On the basis of those parameters, each of our MPs should make one village of his or her constituency a Model Village by 2016. Can’t we do at least this? Shouldn’t we do this? If we have to build a nation, we should start from the village. Make a Model Village. The reason of fixing this target for 2016 is that it is a new scheme. It takes time to formulate a scheme and then to implement it. After 2016, select two more villages for this purpose, before we go for the General Elections in 2019. And after 2019, each Member of Parliament, during his/her tenure of 5 years must establish at-least five model villages in his/her area. I also call upon the Members of Parliament from urban areas to adopt one village of their choice.

I also urge upon the Members of Parliament from Rajya Sabha to adopt one of the villages. If we provide one model village in each district of India then the surrounding villages shall be automatically inspired to follow that model. Let us establish a model village, let us establish a village well equipped with all systems and facilities. The birth anniversary of Jai Prakash Narayan Ji happens to be on 11th October.

On 11th October, the occasion of birth anniversary of Jai Prakash Narayan Ji, I will present a complete blueprint of Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (Members of Parliament Model Village Scheme) before all Members of Parliament and State Governments, and I urge upon State Governments also that as per the feasibility in their respective states, all the Members of Legislative Assembly resolve to establish a model village. You can imagine all the Members of Legislative Assembly and all the Members of Parliament in the country establishing a model village. All of a sudden, there would be a model village in each block of India which could inspire us to transform the amenities in rural areas and could give us a new direction and, therefore, we want to move ahead under this Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

My dear brothers and sisters, ever since our government has taken charge, there has been a discussion in the newspapers, on TV channels as to what would happen to Planning Commission. I believe that when Planning Commission was constituted, it was done on the basis of the circumstances and the needs of those times. In recent years, Planning Commission has contributed to the growth of the country in its own way. I respect that, I am proud of that, but the prevalent situation in the country is different, global scenario has also changed, governments are no longer the centre of economic activities, the scope of such activities has broadened. State governments have been at the center of development and I consider this a good indication. If we have to take India forward, it can happen only by taking the states forward.

India’s federal structure is more important today than in the last 60 years. To strengthen our federal structure, to make our federal structure vibrant, to take our federal structure as a heritage of development, a team of Chief Minister and Prime Minister should be there, a joint team of the Centre and the states should move forward, then to do this job, we will have to think about giving the Planning Commission a look. So, I am saying from the rampart of the Red Fort that it is a very old system and it will have to be rejuvenated, it will have to be changed a lot. Sometimes it costs more to repair the old house, but, it gives us no satisfaction. Thereafter, we have a feeling that it would be better to construct a new house altogether and therefore within a short period, we will replace the planning commission with a new institution having a new design and structure, a new body, a new soul, a new thinking, a new direction, a new faith towards forging a new direction to lead the country based on creative thinking, public-private partnership, optimum utilization of resources, utilization of youth power of the nation, to promote the aspirations of state governments seeking development, to empower the state governments and to empower the federal structure. Very shortly, we are about to move in a direction when this institute would be functioning in place of Planning Commission.

Brothers and sisters, today, on 15th August, we also have the birth anniversary of Maharishi Aurobindo. Maharishi Aurobindo, being a rebel, moved on to achieve the status of a Yoga Guru. With regard to the destiny of India, he remarked, “I have a faith that the divine power and spiritual heritage of India will play an important role towards the welfare of the world.” Such sentiments were echoed by Maharishi Aurobindo. I strongly believe in the words of legends. I have great faith in the statements made by ascetics, sages & saints and that’s why today at the ramparts of Lal Quila I am reminded of the words of Swami Vivekananda. He had said – “I can see before my eyes Mother India awakening once again. My Mother India would be seated as the World Guru. Every Indian would render service towards welfare of humanity. This legacy of India would be useful for the welfare of the world”. These words were spoken by Swami Vivekananda ji in his own style. Friends, the words of Vivekananda ji can never be untrue. The words of Vivekananda ji, his dream of seeing India ensconced as World Guru, his vision, it is incumbent upon us to realize that dream. This capable country, blessed with natural bounty, this country of youth can do much for the world in the coming days.

Brothers and sisters, our foreign policy is a much talked about issue. I clearly believe that India’s foreign policy can be multi-dimensional. But there is an important issue to which I want to draw your attention that the way we fought for freedom, we fought together; we were not separate at that time. We were together. Which was the government with us? What were the weapons available to us? There was a Gandhi, a Sardar and lakhs of freedom fighters and such a huge empire. Didn’t we win in the struggle of freedom against that empire? Did we not defeat the foreign powers? Did we not force them to leave India? We were the ones, they were our ancestors only who showed this might. If the people of India could remove such a big empire without the power of the government, without weapons and even without resources, then friends, it is the need of the hour to eradicate poverty, can we not overcome poverty? Can we not defeat poverty? My 125 crore dear countrymen, let us resolve to eradicate poverty, to win against it. Let us move with the dream of poverty eradication from India. Our neighbouring countries are also faced with the same problem. Why not get together with all the SAARC nations to plan out the fight against poverty? Let`s fight together and defeat poverty. Let us see at-least for once as to how wonderful is the feeling of being alive instead of killing and getting killed.

This is the land where incidents from Siddhartha’s life happened. One bird was shot with an arrow by one brother and the other took out that arrow to save it. They went to mother- whose bird, whose swan? Whether killer’s or saviour’s, they asked of mother. The mother replied, saviours. The saviour has more power than the killer and that makes him Buddha in future. And that’s why I seek cooperation from neighbouring countries for fighting against poverty in concert and cooperate with them, so that together with SAARC countries we can create our importance and emerge as a power in the world. It is imperative that we work together with a dream to win a fight against poverty, shoulder to shoulder.

I went to Bhutan, Nepal, all the dignitaries from SAARC countries took part in oath-taking ceremony; this marked a good beginning. This will definitely yield good results, it is my belief and this thinking of India, in the country and the world, that we want to do well to the countrymen and be useful for the welfare of the world, India wants such a hand to be extended. We are trying to move forward with these dreams to achieve them.

Brothers and Sisters, today on 15th August we will resolve to do something for the country. Let’s be useful for the country, we will move ahead with a resolve to take the country forward, and I assure you, Brothers and Sisters, as well as my colleagues in the Government, that if you work for 12 hours, I will do so for 13 hours. If you work for 14 hours, I will do for 15 hours. Why? It is because; I’m amidst you not as a Prime Minister, but as the first servant. I have formed the government not as a ruler, but as a servant.

Brothers and sisters, I assure that this country has a destiny. It is destined to work for the welfare of the world; it was said by Vivekananda ji. India is born; this Hindustan is born in order to achieve this destiny. One hundred and twenty-five crore countrymen have to move forward wholeheartedly for the welfare of the nation.

Once again I feel proud of the devotion, the sacrifices of the security forces of the country, Para-military forces of the country and all the security forces of the country to protect Mother India. I say to the countrymen; ‘Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty’.

The army is vigilant, we should also be vigilant and the country scales new heights, we have to move forward with this resolution. Speak loudly with me with full force – Bharat Mata ki jai, Bharat Mata ki jai, Bharat Mata ki jai. Jai Hind, Jai Hind, Jai Hind. Vande Mataram, Vande Mataram, Vande Mataram!

WHY SET GOAL !!

Growth is a common goal almost every organization works for. We do business for growth and nobody likes to run a business incurring loss every time. We should accept that both profit and loss are part of any business like success/failure. This is universal truth and we can marginalize the impact of a failure when we understand the causes and work on that to overcome. When i talk of loss i mean less profit and not a complete loss.

I’ve asked this question several times to my own and others among my contacts. What is the need of a goal? During my school days, i was often asked (by my elders) what my aim in life is. All/most of us could have similar experience in their childhood. Few of my friends told me their experience what they replied. Their aim was to become a doctor, an engineer and to gain all such positions well recognized in the society. Let’s think where they learn all that at an early age of 10/12 years. Frankly speaking, i had no knowledge of what a doctor or an engineer is at that age. How many of us truly understand this? So, for me it’s all went in vein without a correct understanding. It’s our society (we create) that feeds our mind what we should become to gain financial freedom and social recognition. Any deviation to the original track is not acceptable and you should study hard (from now) to realize your career goals.

By goals people usually think of their company in general. You can have your personal goals too. I got much information and our little younger generation have a different view. They feel goals are optional and have no relation with our work. They will say like… We have been hired for work and getting paid for that. Goals are not important and all that is important to us is our work and salary. It is their understanding and without a complete understanding. Goals can actually reward us. Pre-set goals can help us travel our road better. They will help us a guide constantly reminding us what we have planned and where we are now in the journey.

There are few obstacles that prevent us realize our common goals (like to achieve expected profit margin). It’s not always lack of good talent/expertize. There can be many other factors associated. I did some analysis (to my capacity and understanding) looking at present standards and processes. What i understood from my analysis, we need a strong value chain to realize (and carry forward) our common goals aligned with the vision and values of our organization.

I understand we can’t achieve more without clear goals in mind. So, there is a need for setting goals. There are several factors that prompt me to think of various goals and what we can achieve in long run by setting and working on our goals. The most important factor is not really because it’s a mandatory need from every employee. We do that but it’s not really the biggest motivational factor. I am a social worker and i always think keeping the need of our society in mind. This is the challenge and opportunity for me. i was thinking of goals that will help us overcome all obstacles on the way to realize our common organizational goals. One such goal could be to develop a better society. This is the base motivational factor behind my goal setting.

After all the research and discussion, I’ve decide to come up with goals (with clear objectives) that will help us realize our vision and values across all levels of our organization and society in turn. The foundation of all my goals will be to make our value chain more strong. Though all are my personal thoughts, i strongly believe they are in-line with our company objectives and will help us realize our goals in long run.

What are your goals and objectives? Share your thoughts to help me learn better in my goal setting process.

ARE YOU DOING, TRYING OR CRYING !!!

What do you usually do when you don’t know what to do about something that puzzles you? We often face challenges at home, at work and in every other facet of life. It’s important how we tackle those problems. Can we see a problem as an opportunity for us to do better?

When i face an issue at home, i used to discuss with my family members. I first try to find a solution myself and later go for a discussion as i feel the need. Sometime i feel what will happen, how my elders will react if I reveal the fact. Finally i go for a discussion with a fear things may go out of control. Whom do you approach first at home? I think the answer is obviously a person who is close to you and having good understanding with you. For me it’s my elder sister and my father. It’s not that i am not close to other people in family but they are the people who understand me better as i spent most of the time with them during my childhood (from school days till my graduation). They are the best counselors and i find better solution/idea from them most of the time.

They generously help us without any selfish desire. That is the power of bonding in great relationships. Have you ever faced a situation when your sister/brother seeks your help? That is easy for your brother to explain. Sometimes it’s easy and at times little difficult for your younger sister to tell you in detail. How about elders? Your elder sister may find it very difficult and never tell you. They just indicate when needed. It’s not because they can’t but because they don’t want to bring more trouble for you. They have enormous patience, tolerance and perseverance. They digest everything to keep you out of all trouble for your better future. How do you help your sister when you understand a need? How do you react and respond to such a situation? Will you do that for her or tell her how she can do that herself? Let’s utilize our brain power and come up with fantastic ideas.

Now, let’s discuss about our workplace in general. Do you face any issue at work like a conflict within your team or finding some good idea to build a great environment? If your answer is YES, what do you do about it? How do you get a future-focused idea? Say, you are confused and going blank but can’t discuss these issues at home as against your company policy. Whom do you approach in such a case? If you say it’s my HR I’ll not believe as people tend to have a fear factor attached. It’s not a general case but happens to a majority of people. Let’s assume you are such a person then who do you approach next with your work related issue. The logic is again the same and it’s the colleague most close to you. She/he could be your team mate, a team lead, your manager or some other in your organization. It’s good to approach our peers at work at the time of need.

We develop bond with people at work over a period of time when we work together. It’s a natural process either with or without our complete knowledge. It’s healthy for our personal development and healthy for our company too. So, what is that bond and drive us together? The logic is again the same and we understand that from our common-sense. Do you have a second thought about what i want to say? I am talking about great relationships that bond us together in a family. That is the key to success. It’s a general truth and applicable everywhere.

God help only those who help themselves. Some people say like ‘i am trying my best but nothing works’. Accept your limitation but don’t stop trying to do better. When there is a difficult task at hand, some other group of people says I’ll try my best and they never try. You ask them after five days and you will find the same answer… I’m still trying. When they don’t get any good result, they say probably my best was not good enough. They procrastinate wasting their time and company time. What do we understand from all these conversation? Probably, they have never tried or not tried well. They could have fear or could be introverts not open for a discussion. They just tell stories to convince others wasting time of everybody in the process. There could be many other reasons like lack of interest, don’t know what to do, carelessness (don’t understand the need and priority) etc…

All the above happen when we fail to bond with others in great relationships. Neither can we solve our own problems nor can we extend our helping hand to others in need. People listen to you when they respect you. Why people disrespect me? Is there anything i need to develop in me, is there a lack of understanding i must look after? It’s nor always the case. There are people who love to have fun. They just overlook everything that comes in their way. It’s the behavior of children. Some adults too behave childish who are not fully grown in their level of maturity as expected of their age. Some people have fun insulting others. Some do that with their peers to prove their supremacy and show others inferior. You are my BOSS, see i am doing this that you can never do. This is because of ego. Some others show strange behavior to retaliate.

Why do we face such issues? You say its human nature and five fingers are not equal. We can’t do much about it; it’s about attitude of a person that can never change. It is true that five fingers are not equal but what made you think we can’t do much on this? Is it a preconceived notion derived from your past failures? How much have you tried? Why shall others accept my idea? Unite your mind and heart in deep meditation. You will find the all answers from the divine when you wake up.

I remember my school days when i used to play with children at our school playground. Sometimes we used to play gully cricket and block the road not to allow any traffic as if our own property. I’ll collect more thoughts from my memory and write more on this later. Whenever i play with children, i learn something good. The rule of the game with children is there is no rule. They sometimes don’t know and most of the time love to break rules. They are opportunistic and it’s their characteristics. The moment they understand the rival party is weak and don’t know about rules (as per their assumption) they start dictating. They start bluffing with their own set of rules to prove their supremacy. There rule is either you teach me or I’ll start doing that with you. Now, the question is how will you take control of your team in such a situation? Will you give them more opportunity to create nuisance and become a silent spectator? What will be your approach?

Are you doing, trying or crying…? We are all called to be leaders. There are leaders around the world who are working day and night to develop a better company for a great society. They are visionaries and focusing hard to give us a great future. Let’s think like leaders and angels of change. It’s the wish of the almighty and we are their messenger to do good for all. Let’s look at others in a different angle and empathize. Can I view problems of my team mates as my own problem or that with my sister/brother? We can bond with others sharing great values we learnt from our elders, books and our society. Allow people misbehave/insult you. Crying is never an option and trying is somewhat OK. So, let’s stop crying and start doing… We can bring change and turn the table around!

I expect to hear from you. Share with me the big IDEA…

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR A GREAT FUTURE

Our environment is a topic of general concern and i have many thoughts coming to mind today on the occasion of world environment day. When i am looking at a great future for all living species, it can’t be without a safe environment.

We celebrate world environment day on 5th June and the day of biodiversity on 22nd May every year. Our environment has a big picture. It’s not limited to our surrounding like our workplace or home. It’s the world as a whole. Why i say the whole world is because one place is not independent of the other when it comes to our environment. When we cause harm to nature at one place, it can affect some other place far away. It’s because of imbalance. Rapid deforestation, industrial pollution and many such factors are all responsible for this imbalance. One major example is earthquake/tsunami that is caused by imbalance in tectonic plates under earths crust. Heavy rainfall causes landslide like that happened at Uttarakhand in recent past. People argue its all natural and we can’t control it. Alright, but who knows. Even if i assume it’s beyond control of human species, then what right do we have to cause harm to something that we can’t create or control?

Nature improves our living standard. It gives us all the basic necessities of life. Mother earth gifted us with all the resources to live a happy life. It constitutes of flora and fauna in many forms. What we give her in return? She doesn’t ask anything in return. We should think about something to present her in return. We always protect when we get something as a gift. Nature is a gift to human beings among all its diversity. Shall we not take care and protect it? This will be the best present to her and this is something not beyond our control.

What i found in dictionary the meaning of biodiversity is “the diversity of plant and animal life in a particular habitat or in the world as a whole”. I consider diversity in the world as a whole. Let’s have a look at the importance of biodiversity in its various forms of life. We have various types of plants and animal species in land. Marine life covers a great number of creatures in the form of fishes, aquatic plants that we don’t come across very often.

All forms of life are important for sustainability and growth. We get oxygen from plants and they play a major role in controlling the temperature in our ecosystem. We get all our basic needs like food, cloth and shelter from plants. We get fuel to cook our food from plants. Animals too serve a great purpose in our development. Animals live in jungles unlike human beings. It’s their habitat. If we destroy their natural habitat by cutting trees, they will be homeless and may come outside to our area in search of food and suitable space to live. Few animals are now categorized in the list of endangered species as they are in the verge of extinction if we don’t take necessary steps. Tigers control deer population. Nature has made them carnivorous to feed on herbivores. There are some species that depend on others for food. It is by nature. If there is a decline in population of single species it will affect the dependent. Nature created all the species for our wellbeing and to maintain balance. We need to take care to protect it.

There is a strong interdependence of biodiversity with our development and poverty alleviation. It is more significant to developing countries where there is poverty in large scale. We must be in a position to fulfill our basic needs before going for industrial growth. All this we get from the diverse forms of life. Let’s think of rural and tribal people. They are most dependent on biodiversity for most of their needs. They get food/fuel/medicine from plants, fish from ponds/rivers. Aquatic plants and animals keep our water bodies clean. Urban people too are dependent on these rural masses for their food. If they don’t get land for cultivation and wetlands for breeding fish they will be poorer as they need to buy that from market. Take a case when you have the money but no resources available to buy. We will be nowhere. So we can secure our future by protecting biodiversity. Marine life too plays a great role in preserving our ecosystem. All are important and we can’t ignore any form of life.

In the name of industrial growth and human development we destroy natural habitats. This act can prove fatal to our own sustenance. If we don’t take care of nature it will not take care of us. We’re all like animals at the beginning. When there is diversity among different forms of life there is some need for it. We need to respect the law of nature. There are many forms of life that we know and there might be many more undiscovered till date. What is the significance of biodiversity to us? We’re all the same at the beginning like any other species. Human race have evolved over a period of time to its present form. They become stronger and smarter.

It’s god’s grace that we are the smartest of all the races known till date. We are gifted with knowledge and power to live a healthy life. We feel we can just gain control over anybody and anything on this earth because of our superpower and scientific growth. Can we really gain control over our fate and future if we abuse our power and knowledge? If there is any superpower what I believe to be present in the form of GOD must be angry with the act of human beings on earth. We have developed our own law which is something like “FOR ME TO FLOURISH YOU NEED TO PERISH”. This may be a thought in my mind but that is very true as we always look out for possibilities of development and growth at the cost of others. It’s against the law of nature.

We can draw examples from animals. Even a tiger don’t hunt unless it feels hungry. If we fail to protect others we might end up losing our own race. I don’t know the real cause of extinction of dinosaurs from earth. Research has many findings. But i think it is because of nature and can be attributable to the changing climatic conditions where they could not adapt well. Is our human civilization in danger and facing extinction? I’m not thinking negative. It can be a possibility. We are least bothered about biodiversity and the prosperity of other creatures. Population of polar bears, tigers and penguins are on the decline. There are many new species discovered in Antarctica. Nature may develop some new species smarter and stronger to us who can adapt with the changing conditions. The worst could be if they don’t like human beings to prosper with them.

Biodiversity indirectly controls our environment and climatic conditions. For our scientific growth and development we conduct many experiments that do more harm than good to our biodiversity. The largest ozone hole till date was discovered in Antarctica. Ultraviolet rays from sun are harmful for our biodiversity including human beings. I still remember the gory pictures appearing on TV screen after the war in Iraq when oil tankers were spilled into the ocean. The marine life suffered the biggest setback I know till date. I don’t know how many aquatic creatures lost their lives as they could not adapt themselves in a poisonous environment. The oil was floating for months together and in that condition the major problem for marine life was lack of oxygen.

It is the law of nature to maintain a balance among all its life forms. It’s our duty to abide by the law and protect our natural resources. If we break the law, nature will create havoc and show its fury as we observe in the form of natural disasters, non-seasonal changes in our climate, global warming, acid rain etc. These days we observe earthquakes, tsunami and super cyclones frequently unlike that in the past. I remember the time of super cyclone in Orissa in the year 1999. I was an eye witness and observed the plight of people both in rural and urban areas. Electricity supply disrupted for about fifteen days at our home which is located in the capital. Most of the trees uprooted and few stood still without any branches and leaves. The following summer season was too hot and day time temperature was about 48 degree Celsius. It’s all because of nature as we fail to protect our biodiversity. What best can we do? When nature needs to maintain a balance we can restrict our growth in population to our present habitat and land available to us for construction. Let’s don’t invade the land of other creatures. We van protect jungles and water bodies. It’ll never restrict our growth and development. In fact it’ll accelerate the process and help in alleviation of poverty when we are less in number. Less number of people can enjoy more resources.

Changing climatic conditions has repercussions. Its impact can be very harsh for human beings. When there will be no/few jungles, animals and plants the day time temperature may increase drastically over a period of years. There was an advertisement in some Indian English daily news paper few years back. It was all in pictorial view about the changing climacteric conditions and its possible impact on us. Let me translate few of the pictures I remember to words as I understand. It had a prediction about our living conditions in the year 2050. The average day time temperature could rise to 50 degree Celsius and it will be at subzero level during the night time. Trees were shown standing still without green leaves. People use oxygen masks and wear specially built suits like that in spacecrafts to protect them from the scorching sun rays. Few spend time in oxygen chambers in need of fresh oxygen. There was apparently no water to take bath and very less to drink. A person has lost all his hair and children don’t grow hair on their head. A large portion of the present human habitation will be covered by ocean. People don’t take bath but apply some kind of lotion all over the body as an alternative to keep them cool and protect them from radiation. Would we like to see this kind of environment not conducive for human development in future?

You may argue these to be all negative thoughts. They arise because of the changing global climatic conditions as we fail to protect our biodiversity. Actually our surrounding, the environment we live in impacts out thought process. I don’t know what guides me and my thought process but I believe there is some controlling force above all of us. I am not superstitious but it happens. The worst could be when we think and act negative and the best could be when we think negative but act positive. I was thinking about flight safety and the very next day morning I got the news of an air crash while landing. I started blaming my thoughts for some time as if there is some connection and later gained control over my emotions. I was so upset that I could not move for a while. If a negative thought can give rise to some positive action I’ll not blame myself. But it’s hardly realized. Now I don’t categorize any thought to be positive or negative. They give rise to new ideas and can be useful by some means. As long as our action is positive I don’t mind a negative thought. I am not out of context of the topic. The more we think about all possibilities the more no of ideas we can generate for positive and timely action. There is no option but to protect our biodiversity and nature to protect our own for sustainable development and growth.

Who is accountable to our growth and prosperity? It’s we, the human beings. Who doesn’t want growth & prosperity? I don’t think we can find anybody in this category. Can we realize growth in long term at the cost of others and our nature? It doesn’t sound good to me. Now we should keep a strict vigil with a bird’s eye view on all our action. We must regulate it and step back if it’s not in the betterment of all living creatures. It’s is in our hands to protect the human race from a possible extinction. All the natural forms of life play some role in regulating our environmental conditions. They are all important and if we protect them by protecting their natural habitat, nature will give us protection and that is the rule. No scientific development can protect us if we don’t give protection to our nature.

I’ve shared mine and now it’s your turn to help me learn better with your valuable thoughts and comments. Let’s protect ourselves by protecting our environment to develop a better world! A safe environment can lead us to a great future!!

Have a great day! 💐

NEED FOR SECURITY

Nobody likes to live in an insecure world full of uncertainty. So, what is security and why is that important for all. Security concerns start with our home and is a widespread issue almost everywhere. We often read news articles and listen to news programs where we find many information on national security (concerns related to our country). I used to think of my home and at times about issues affecting our country. Very little i thought of my workplace and knew about issues here until i started thinking about it. I am not talking in particular about any specific workplace. It could be yours too and could be a generic issue at any place where people ignore or don’t understand the need.

I often ask questions myself on workplace security. What is workplace security and why do we need that? What is the need of security guards in a workplace? many such thoughts often ponder my mind. Negligence…

VALUES FOR ALL

What is value and why should we care for it? Let’s think of all values that we’ve been learning from our childhood. I’ve learnt from my parents, teachers and all my elders. These values really help us become better and better human beings. I often think i know most of the core values to it’s complete meaning but when i entered my workplace and shared my thoughts with others, i came to know there is so much more to learn and i am not a complete person. We celebrate values week to understand it’s importance and share with others. Values enrich our lives everywhere including our workplace. What are the core values that never change with time.

I have a collection of it i’d like to discuss here.

https://debasisnayak.org/2019/12/16/core-values-2/

** What are your values in life and work? I’d love to learn from you.

WHY HIERARCHY ?

When we say hierarchy, it has different meaning to different people though it has a common meaning. It is widely misinterpreted when somebody says my organization is non-hierarchical. To somebody it means there is no hierarchy in the organization and to some other it has a different meaning. He feels that you can call everybody here by name. There are absolutely no harm calling people by name when we know how to do that with different people according to their age group and experience but does that really mean that we are non-hierarchical? Every organization has a hierarchy. Without hierarchy, it’s just impossible to run an organization. What I understand non-hierarchical means we can communicate to all in the organization irrespective of their hierarchy and it provides a healthy and open work culture where everybody can have a feeling of equality which fosters growth. People feel at ease sharing their views and idea in a group when they don’t have a feeling of senior/sub-ordinate kind. At the same time we should maintain common courtesy in all kind of communication like email, telephonic etc. Here we should follow guidelines of corporate communication in all kinds of interaction like how to wish any of our colleagues at work when she/he is up/down in the hierarchy. There are special training sessions available in the areas like corporate communication, behavioral workplace ethics and many others.

Why is hierarchy important? I have asked this question myself several times. Hierarchy is the pillar for success and growth of any organization. Let’s don’t get confused with rank of a person when we talk about hierarchy. Rank-based organizations are different like defense departments where people get recognition with their ranks like somebody is a general, a major, a colonel, a brigadier etc. On the other hand more transparent companies like that in the IT industry are peer-based where success is shared across all levels and people are all treated equal. We respect our peers and work together for mutual success. These kind of peer-based organizations are often termed as non-hierarchical. What does that mean? Let’s understand.

The term non-hierarchical does not mean there is no hierarchy. Every organization has a hierarchy. It’s not posible to function smoothly without establishing hierarchy. Non-hierarchical means we treat people equally irrespective of their position and hierarchy. It’s not like somebody is more important and the other person is less important to us. We can’t get success without correct understanding of hierarchy as it’ll not be possible to maintain work-flow when nobody listen to their peers and they want to do everything on their own. It’ll break discipline. Everybody in the organization are equally important as long as they follow company vision and values.

Everybody feels valued and feels to have equal opportunity for growth in non-hierarchical organizations. It’s useless if we don’t understand values. How to develop an organization where people understand the correct meaning of hierarchy and drive their growth with values? Non-hierarchical organizations can function perfectly where people understand the need to respect each other and guide themselves at work with correct values. They need not be taught who their boss is as they already understand that well and know how to keep her/him happy. There is no inferior/superior kind of culture but rather a friendly work environment and people don’t complain against one another. The person we report is always our higher authority and with this culture in place nobody (superior authority) treat their people (reporting subordinates) as inferior. It’s not easy to build such an organization where most team members are having a maturity level that of kids. Actually our value system, communication and hierarchy are all connected and inter-dependent. One can’t function well in the absense of the other.

A case study (my own case):

I got puzzled with hierarchy… how to establish hierarchy in our communication?

Do hierarchy has any connection with our day to day communication? My answer to this question is Yes. To understand it better we need to build a system where people can practice it and our medium of communication can be of great help. Let’s find out the best mode of communication where we can practice hierarchical communication everyday. What comes to my mind is our email system we use most in any official communication. It is the best media as it can reach a mass audience at once and we can review it later too at our leisure. A good official email should be able to explain our understanding of organizational hierarchy to a greater extent.

We should not write the email id of one person more than once in any email communication. It’s bad manners and treated as a form of misconduct though unintentional. People start thinking of us as careless. For example if i am sending an email, i need not write my email again in CC. Some people argue they are doing this as that want to keep that in their inbox for future reference. That is really not required as we can find the same email in our ‘sent items’ folder anytime we want. Still if we want to save it we can move that from sent items to any archive folder.

It’s possible to determine hierarchy in a larger group of employees too. We can follow some standard practice like clubbing members in a group when size is more than four. The group can have any name like TMs/Managers/Leadership etc., as per relevance. Let’s take an example where i’ve been asked to report four senior members whom i have never met before. I’ve not seen them before and don’t know them personally too. I’ve joined a new team where all are strangers to me by face and name. The challenge before me is to follow a standard practice in email communication. My knowledge here is limited and i know that i need to place all the email id’s of people up in heirarchy to me in CC field. That is the only knowledge i had and i approached a senior member among our colleagues to discuss about the same. The following paragraph is about our conversation.

He also suggested the same as standard practice and told me what better you can do is ‘place them all in CC in some order say ascending as per their hierarchy’. I asked how can i know that when all are new to me. He replied just apply your great thoughts in action and still if you can’t find a great solution, come back to me. I took some time and thought about it. The only information i had was their email id’s and i had an email client pre-configured where i can write email to them. I just typed emails of all in the new email compose window with the hope of finding some more information about them and it worked for me. When i double-clicked on an email i found information about the person like alias name, email, office, phone, job title, department etc. These information really could not help me solving my problem and the challenge was still there how to determine hierarchy among these four people. I could not sleep well in the night as time was running out and i had to send an email (with correct standards) anyhow before start of lunch hours tomorrow. I just waited the night to pass and approached my mentor early morning next day around 7 AM at his home. I explained him everything and told him i could see only indivisual employee information for all of them but i still could not determine the order. One among them is a vice president and the other people having designations as vice president, senior director and senior vice president. I never got a chance to know them personally and i don’t know their hierarchy and reporting structure. How to determine an hierarchical order to email. My mentor suggsted, they are all in the leadership team and vice president position is up in the hierarchy to a manager or director. So, it’s simple. Likewise you can find out the hierarchy between a manager, senior manager and director. I’ve nodded and told him i was also thinking in a similar fashion but i still have ambiguity. To add more to my pity and turmoil (a state of mental agitation i was going through) i found two people in the group having same designation as vice president. What to do?

My mentor took some time and was staring at me straight to my eyes. he replied… can you find out information like their employee id and whom they report. I replied, what will i do with that i only need to be concerned about my reporting manager and team. Why should i collect that information? That is none of my job responsibility. People will think of me as a non-sense fellow having no work to do. As more and more negative thoughts crippled my mind, i forgot all basics and asked him ‘are you really helping me…?’ He just put a gentle smile at me and asked me to cool down. He told, i understand you are under pressure but we need to come up with a solution. So, take my words at ease and i will tell you why? He again started thinking for a while and as usual strated conversation with a smile.

See Debasis… I know you are a very talented person who cares to check for minute details in all your activities. Thats good and we should not do something without correct understanding where there is a scope to learn things better. Wih my suggestion, i had no intention to treat you as a fool or make people laugh at you with your gestures. You are quite correct, asking these questions may create a bad circle for you. It may prove good to you too if you find few optimists who cares for all. It’s upto you how you want to conduct the experiment. The easy way is to approach somebody you trust having correct information who can provide you employee id or any unique id and manager details. I’ll tell you why you need to know that. Listen to me patiently for a while. The second choice is for those who are new to the team like you and who find it very difficult to approach somebody to ask these questions. If you can’t ask anybody, still there is a way to find these information. My hint and suggestion would be to dig deeper into the information available in your company intranet and email client. You can definitely find these information there.

Now, what to do with these information? Do you have an idea? I hope you ahve already started thinking about it. Take few minutes more and then talk to me. Now it’s 7.30 AM and i am sure we can find a better solution by 8 AM today. You can reach you office in time by 9 AM with renewed and vibrant thoughts that will make you whole day filled with energy. I was quite impatient to find a solution in a hurry and also i had fear in mind what will happen if i failed to send the email correctly in time. I just replied in five minutes .. No IDEA Sir ! He told me i can read your face that you are in a hurry and looking for shortcuts. You have not put your thoughts into action.

Anyway, let’s start walking and we will discuss more on the way to your home. You can reach your home in time having the solution and i too can enjoy my morning walk. So, tell me what you think you can find from the employee ids of the two vice presidents that you need to report. Tell me anything abstract coming to your mind as everybody have some idea and there is nothing like ‘No IDEA’. We have twenty more minutes to discuss during our walk and i can tell you my thoughts in just two minutes before you leave. So, don’t worry and put your thoghts in action.

When i observed there is no route to escape, i replied… Sir, probably a person with smaller employee number have joined the organization earlier to a person having a higher number. That’s correct and that’s the way we do the numbering. We never reuse an existing employee id even long after separation. So, a person who joins later will get a new employee number which is plus one to the employee number of the person joined us last. So, what next? So, probably this person (older employee) is having more industry experience and senior to the other person. He replied .. Not necessarily always. That could be true in this case of two vice presidents but you need to check another area. What is that Sir.. i am getting confused. Check their managers whether they are reporting to the same manager and different people having a different hierarchy. Please give an example i asked. He told, one among them could be reporting to a senior vice president and the other person to Executive vice president and EVP position is higher up in hierarchy to an SVP. A person reporting to SVP has a position lower in hierarchy to a person who direcly reports to EVP and likewise you can find hierarchy for n number of people. If they report to the same person, the person having smaller employee number is senior to the other person. I hope this can help you. Yes, Sir. Thank a lot i replied and left the place with great smile in my face as if i won a contract.

How to establish hierarchy in an organization? What to gain with it and what to lose without it?

By demonstrating these values at work and at every other place of need we can become role models for our younger generation. They will again act as catalyst for their offsprings and the cycle will go on with everlasting values. This is basically a top-down approach which is a proven methodology. Some people feel if we want to achieve great success we need to think out of the box and do different things. Does that mean to prove ourselves different we should do all as we think that to be correct without respecting viewpoint of others? Don’t you think it may end up with all non-sense activities if not driven by values?

During a discussion i came to know about a person who feels she should not read too many books as she aspire to become a writer. The big question is “Shall we think like good readers can’t become good writers”. When i argued there is no harm in reading books to build your career as a writer i got strange response. I even suggested you may not read too many books at random but can choose among selected categories you like. Her response was when you read books/thoughts of others, you tend to be like them and can’t produce great thoughts of your own. how strange? I am still thinking about it. Learning from others is no issue when you are unique having the required self-discipline and control. With this approach you will not get biased but can always generate great thoughts and judiciously plan an action.

There are absolutely no loss in this approach but without hierarchy established we’ll completely lose our value system. Establishing hierarchy appears as a loss at first to some people as they feel it’s against our corporate philosophy as we are non-hierarchical. I am again saying it’s highly mis-interpreted and it’s because of our lack of understanding. Non-hierarchical does not mean we don’t have or we don’t need hierarchy. Hierarchy coupled with values can do wonders for anybody aspiring to be successful. When we give respect to others we gain that in return. A strong value system can transform our society.

Let’s build a peer-based organization where hierarchy exists for good of all and everybody understand it well. There will be no discrimination and equal opportunity for all those who respect others. Road is always open for all who have lost their original track but want to come back to the main stream with proper learning/understanding. We can grow when we accept and learn from our mistake.

I was just thinking what i could do better improving my communication skills with this awesome idea. Believe me i won many hearts and i am quite hopeful i’ll wear many hats in coming times as i learn more from you and do better at work. Do you have a challenge before you and do you have an IDEA to confront with it! Please discuss with me if i can share some information with my past/present experience. Also, share with me how you have dealt well with the challenge from you personal experince. Help me learn better from your case studies. Tt does not matter whether they are true stories of your life experience or as you learnt that from others. I’ll be very happy to find your personal comments and email. Let’s start sharing our stories!!

A VISIT TO RAMAKRISHNA MISSION – SHIVANNAHALLI

It’s a cool winter morning when i started from my home around 7 AM. It’s heavy traffic on that day a normal 40/45 minutes journey took me more than 1 hour to complete. Finally, I reached my pickup point around 8.15 AM. I’d to wait a while till our bus arrived at Jayadeva hospital near jaynagar east end. The weather was so nice even waiting at the bus stop was a pleasure. My wait was over in 30 minutes with the arrival of our well-decorated white liner bus. I found our event coordinators raising their hands towards me from the entrance of the by us. For me most of the volunteers in the bus were strangers by face before this meeting.

I collected my volunteer T-shirt in the bus and get united with others as one NTT DATA volunteers group. All of us are quite well dressed and in festive mood. I mingled with them and had a good discussion. Most of us work in different work location serving different customers. Few of us knew each other only by name from our telephonic conversation and email communication before the event. So it’s a good platform which provided me very nice experience of making new friends and getting to know each other.

We started our journey towards our destination. It’s blue, green and white all around and our young team was in the mood of an excursion. Though we’re visiting for a social cause, the enthusiasm and fun was no less than that of a picnic party. The way to shivannahalli was quite picturesque.

Ramakrishna Mission, Shivannahalli is located about 30 kilometers from city center. Our bus reached the venue at around 10.15 AM. We get out of the bus at the drop point and had some snacks. Then we went to meet swamiji at the mission. He welcomed us all and was looking at us as if waiting for a while for us to come. We had a photo session with him. The level of hospitality was simply great. We’re all provided with free breakfast and lunch there. The quality of food was of high standard and all vegetarian.

We picked one plate each and stood in queue. The discipline demonstrated by our team members is exemplary. We cleaned plates on our own after having food. That time reminded me of my school days when we’re taught basic discipline at our study. We used to celebrate Ganesh (Lord Ganapati) puja and Saraswati (Devi Saraswati) puja at school. In those days i was very impatient to get ‘prasadam’/’meals’ during a PUJA we celebrate at school. So are other kids there. Probably, this is only kids’ behavior and we learned discipline as we grew up. Even today I follow the same discipline at home taught by my mother. I used to clean my own plates and that of my ageing parents while at home.

It was fun venturing into the forest with others. We found many coconut trees and few raw coconut shells on the ground. Probably, those fell naturally by wind. Few of us had coconut juice and the white cream inside. The size was quite large and I used to get one in market at a cost of Rs. 20 in Bangalore. It was an amazing experience. It reminded me of the movie CAST AWAY, how people survive long only with natural products. We found few wild spiders on the way with their big nets. They are quite poisonous as I come to know from locals there.

We’re all feeling tired after a long exercise of planting and watering trees. We’re feeling hungry and few of us had some food again. We had vegetable fried rice with ‘raita ‘(curd mixed with fruits and vegetables) and oranges.

It was like a journey of a lifetime for me. I was thinking how much value it can add to all our life when we do ‘satsang’. It is nothing but spending time with and learning from like-minded people whom we term our GURUs / LEADERs. We’re asked what the purpose of our visit is whether we know that. Great leaders inspire people with a question like this and Swamiji started his speech with the same.

We had a lot of learning on nature conservation through his speech and discussion. We used to make excuses for cutting trees. Even we don’t need to take away a single log of wood fallen by any natural disaster. It’ll decompose automatically. We give reasons for all wrong doing like we are clearing roads for smooth passage of our vehicle. We just need to clean roads in our living place and not inside the forest. You can easily walk over a fallen tree if there is a need and it does not take a very long time to decompose.

He taught us many things related to conservation of our forest land. We learned the need to protect our environment. When he was gifted a set of synthetic color paints, he told us the need to use natural paints whenever possible. Artificial paints are made of chemicals and petroleum products that pose a threat to our environment. In our old days we had great painters who used only natural paints and their paintings are still in good condition after so many years.

We discussed many issue like greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion, use of plastics bags vs. bags made of biodegradable material, man made forest fire, cutting trees, killing wild animals etc. We can keep our pollution level under check if we try avoiding use of vehicles that emit toxic gases not suitable for our environment. We have alternatives these days – thanks to technology. We can use electric vehicles and whenever possible can avail mass transportation system rather than our personal vehicles.

As it’s all from my memory, I might have added little additional information not discussed there from my own thoughts. Overall it was quite invaluable time for all of us. When all of unite for a good cause, we can easily change ourselves and our environment for the well-being of all.
