UTKAL DIWAS

State Foundation Day (Odisha): 01 April

Odisha Day, also Utkala Dibasa, is celebrated on 1 April in the Indian state of Odisha in memory of the formation of the state as a separate state out of Bihar and Orissa Province with addition of Koraput and Ganjam from the Madras Presidency on 1 April 1936. After losing its political identity completely in 1568 following the defeat and demise of the last king Mukunda Dev, efforts resulted in the formation of a politically separate state under British rule on a linguistic basis on 1 April 1936.

When you want to feel loved

When you want to feel confident

When you want to feel happy

But you are feeling the exact opposite

Have a glance

At your daily life

Look for the little moments

That make you feel loved

By your friends or family

Or even when a stranger asks “how are you?”

Hold on to that feeling

Think about the time

When you overcame a obstacle you thought you couldn’t

But you did

Imagine how you felt

Confident? Strong? Tough?

Hold on to that feeling

Notice the little joys in life

Eating your favourite food, hearty laugh with friends

Maybe some deep meaningful conversations with your partner or friend

Hold on to that feeling

Let that fill you up

Let the happiness, gratitude, bliss consume you

Let your heart expand in gratitude and awe

Replay the happy memories from time to time

To remind yourself of…

स्थित्वास्यामन्तकालेऽपि ब्रह्मनिर्वाणमृच्छति॥

Once a leader reaches the state of absolute ego-less bliss, he never allows conflicts to wither away his stage of total freedom. (2.72)

NETWORK SECURITY – I

IP Address: An Internet Protocol address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

There are four different types of IP addresses: public, private, static, and dynamic.

Public IP Address

A public IP address is an address where one primary address is associated with your whole network. In this type of IP address, each of the connected devices has the same IP address.

This type of public IP address is provided to your router by your ISP.

Private IP Address

A private IP address is a unique IP number assigned to every device that connects to your home internet network, which includes devices like computers, tablets, smartphones, which is used in your household.

It also likely includes all types of Bluetooth devices you use, like printers or printers, smart devices like TV, etc. With a rising industry of internet of things (IoT) products, the number of private IP addresses you are likely to have in your own home is growing.

Dynamic IP Address

Dynamic IP addresses always keep changing. It is temporary and are allocated to a device every time it connects to the web. Dynamic IPs can trace their origin to a collection of IP addresses that are shared across many computers.

Dynamic IP addresses are another important type of internet protocol addresses. It is active for a specific amount of time; after that, it will expire.

Static IP Address

A static IP address is an IP address that cannot be changed. In contrast, a dynamic IP address will be assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, which is subject to change. Static IP address never changes, but it can be altered as part of routine network administration.

Static IP addresses are consistent, which is assigned once, that stays the same over the years. This type of IP also helps you procure a lot of information about a device.

Points to keep in mind: Never use someone else’s IP address or allow someone else to use yours. The same goes for passwords for accounts on shared systems. Do pay attention to security. You have a duty to others to keep your machine secure. Hackers will attack any vulnerable machine.

The internet uses ports as well as your IP address to connect. There are thousands of ports for every IP address, and a hacker who has your IP can try all of those ports to brute-force a connection, taking over your phone for example and stealing your information.

Static IP addresses pose potential security weak points since hackers will have sufficient time to attack the network. Static IP addresses always cost significantly more than dynamic IP addresses. Setting up a static IP is usually more complex without the intervention of manual configuration aid from the ISP.

Commonly dynamic IPs are much more secure than static IPs because they change gradually. Static IPs pose potential security counter areas because static IPs are consistent and hackers will have sufficient time to attack the network.

IPs are owned by ISPs, and each IP is assigned to a user. When you’re connected to your work network, if a hacker has your IP address, they could harm you with a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.

Advantages of a static IP

There are numerous advantages to using a static IP address. Among these benefits are:

  1. Better DNS support: Static IP addresses are much easier to set up and manage with DNS servers.
  2. Server hosting: If you are hosting a web server, email server, or any other kind of server, having a static IP address makes it easier for customers to find you via DNS. Practically speaking that means it’s quicker for clients to get to your websites and services if they have a static IP address.
  3. Convenient remote access: A static IP address makes it easier to work remotely using a VPN or other remote access programs.
  4. More reliable communication: Static IP addresses make it easier to use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for teleconferencing or other voice and video communications.
  5. More reliable geo-location services: With a static IP address, services can match the IP address with its physical location. For example, if you use a local weather service with a static IP address you’re more likely to get the weather report you need instead of the one for the next city over.

Disadvantages of a static IP

A static IP address isn’t ideal for all situations.

  1. Static IPs are more hackable: With a static IP address, hackers know exactly where your server is on the Internet. That makes it easier for them to attack it.
  2. Higher cost: ISPs generally charge more for static IP addresses, particularly with consumer ISP plans. Business ISP plans often include static IP, at least as an option, but they are more expensive than end-user plans; be sure to ask if it’s an extra cost.
  3. Real-world security concerns: Anyone with the right network tools can find where you and your computers are located. VPNs can help alleviate this concern by hiding your physical location.

WORLD POETRY DAY

World Poetry Day is celebrated on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard”. Its purpose is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world and, as the original UNESCO declaration says, to “give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements”.

It was generally celebrated in October, but in the latter part of the 20th century the world community celebrated it on the 15th, the birthday of Virgil, the Roman epic poet and poet laureate under Augustus. The tradition to keep an October date for national or international poetry day celebrations still holds in many countries. The United Kingdom generally uses the first Thursday in October, but elsewhere a different October, or even sometimes a November date, is celebrated.

The 2021 World Poetry Day in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris was dedicated to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Macedonian poet, writer, literary translator and linguistic scholar Blaže Koneski. At the same time, the British poet Carol Ann Duffy was announced as the recipient of the Golden Wreath Award of the Struga Poetry Evenings for 2021.

WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY

TB Day: 24 March

Sand art by Sudarsan Pattnaik

World Tuberculosis Day, observed on 24 March each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. In 2018, 10 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.5 million died from the disease, mostly in low and middle-income countries. This also makes it the leading cause of death from an infectious disease.

World TB Day is one of eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Chagas Disease Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Patient Safety Day and World AIDS Day.

ZERO DISCRIMINATION DAY

Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated on 1 March each year by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations. The day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. The day was first celebrated on March 1, 2014, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing.

In February 2017, UNAIDS called on people to “make some noise around zero discrimination, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions, goals and dreams.”

The day is particularly noted by organisations like UNAIDS that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. “HIV related stigma and discrimination is pervasive and exists in almost every part of the world including our Liberia”, according to Dr. Ivan F. Camanor, Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia. The UN Development Programme also paid tribute in 2017 to LGBTI people with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination.

Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws making discrimination against the LGBTI community more likely, especially during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code, s377[5]) that used to criminalise homosexuality in that country, before that law was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018.

In 2015, Armenian Americans in California held a ‘die-in’ on Zero Discrimination Day to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
